Imagine most people not knowing what your ethnicity is and/or where your country is located, until the Kardashians came along. Imagine growing up and seeing pictures and hearing stories of your great grandparents surviving a mass brutal massacre that no one was held responsible for. Imagine marching every year on the same day for a cause that's been long forgotten. Imagine seeing the difference between how big your country used to be, and how barely visible it is today. Imagine the same government who tried to exterminate your people say that the recalled details of those events are best described as "details from a wild and vivid imagination" -- and having majority of the world agree.
Just imagine.
The Promise is rich with terrific performances and tremendous production values, but it's a terribly boring romantic drama that wastes an interesting real-life story and shamefully reduces it to mere background noise.

What an absolute travesty that the Armenian Genocide is still unacknowledged by the Turkish government. I'm so glad this movie exists to shed light on this terrible tragedy, even if it is fictional. It's not perfect, but its importance cannot be overstated - watch it!

i am 1/4th armenian on my dad’s side; my great grandmother, hranoush “helen” jara-hian, who escaped the armenian genocide, died when i was seven. her father and brothers were killed by turkish soldiers, and her baby brother died of starvation during the escape. only she and her mother and sister made it to america. i’ve only read her journals once when i was younger, but i’ve been told the general story enough times to have the imagery of it burned in my mind. i didn’t grow up immersed in this culture, i wasn’t around any armenian community, it was all just this one story.

It is sturdy, compelling stuff, blending personal drama surrounding an Armenian medical student, an artist, and a journalist with the odyssey of Armenian villagers forced from their homes by the regime in power. Clear-eyed and gripping, the intriguing and tragic narrative is supported by a stellar cast and well-heeled production that moves at an involving clip. The work is impactful and, ultimately, inspiring.

i chose to watch this because i clicked on christian bale in netflix and this popped up. while the movie itself wasn’t amazing, it does portray a part of history that many people don’t know about. i didn’t, but i did a bit of research and i’d like to learn more about the armenian genocide. the armenian genocide remembrance day is april 24 which is in 4 days. i encourage everyone to learn about this tragedy as i am trying to!

The Promise highlights the Armenian Genocide in such a clever, interesting and respectful way, not shying away from its violence and despair. It's heartbreaking, but hopeful, with an incredibly powerful ending, and that deserves five stars alone.

Even though The Promise is sadly hackneyed at times, it kind of survives on its uprightness. The Armenian Genocide is something that is still flagrantly denied by many people, even so far as Turkey still refusing to acknowledge the atrocities enacted by their previous standing government. I've had only a cursory knowledge of these events but always passively wondered if they had made or would make a film about it. Well I'd been sitting on a blu-ray of The Promise without even knowing that it was the one.

This movie unfortunately is a bit of a hodgepodge. The director isn’t incompetent but he use lacked a clear vision for the film. Maybe the material overwhelmed him.

Not the greatest film around, in fact I would have given it 3 stars. The acting is solid, but the romance plot distracts too much from the actual matter of the film, which is of course the Armenian genocide. As for the reason of giving it 3,5 stars, I did this for the simple matter that the film dares to speak about said events. A genocide which is still being denied by the perpetrator, so any attempt to highlight these crimes against humanity must be encouraged
