this short is so sincere and makes a quiet but significant impact on the heart. there were so many moments in this that hit so close to home.

Eunhee: mom do you think I'm pretty??
A 27 mins Korean short film, we get to see the world from a 9 year old girl Eunhee's perspective about her life and what she feels about her closed ones.. Beautifully directed by Kim Bora we see how her family neglects her, siblings bullies her and how she sees her friend's family affection to their kids.. There's a scene when Eunhee father ties her shoes and that was such a powerful scene just cause the way the camera was placed over her facing down and the way she wanted to embrace her dad was truly beautiful... Also it's about her music exam and though she's enthusiastic about it her family doesn't care.. Filled with beautiful moments, great filmmaking skills and absolutely master performance from the kid, this is a must watch.. Can't believe the director showed such family dynamics just under 27 mins. Unbelievable.
Of neglect. Seeking familial warmth in a harsh world. Forced to grow up and adjust oneself to the cold reality. She's too young to be taken seriously, and innocent enough to be subservient. A look at the voiceless in a year when their country rose to global prominence, The Recorder Exam feels universal despite being in a setting so particular. For anyone who hasn't had the easiest childhood, it's not long before you find yourself in her shoes. It quietly crept up on me with the weight of the whole world, but not before holding up a mirror to my own past.
I put this on because it's leaving mubi in a few days, and let me tell you, I wasn't expecting to feel this much on a Monday morning.
It's such a sensible story of childhood, of wanting love from your parents, of wanting to impress them and receive affection, of feeling misplaced in your environment, be it your family or your school. It was absolutely heartbreaking & beautiful.
