A documentary chronicling Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour's preparations for the 2007 fall-fashion issue.
"It's been Bleak Street over here in America."
R.J. Cutler's The September Issue airily traces the construction of what was then the largest-ever edition of Vogue magazine (it has since been eclipsed in volume by the September 2012 issue). Most of the conflict hinges on the relationship between the icily sociopathic editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her empathic creative director Grace Coddington.
I sense that the film's impression of Wintour is meant to be that of a no-nonsense get-things-done type whose uncaring frigidity is but a regrettable byproduct of insecurity and perfectionism—as many inane talking heads say something to this effect. However, the picture I came away with is of a power-crazed sadist whose blinding self-obsession has obliterated all perspective. For…
The first time I watched "The September Issue" I fell even more in love with Grace Coddington (if that's possible) - total. utter. girl crush. ^_^
I knew of her already, since I follow fashion rather closely (full disclosure: I worked in the industry for 13 years and for 10 of those years I collected every issue of American "Vogue" and many British editions as well). I already owned a copy of Grace's "Catwalk Cats", so I knew she was an artist.
But here, in "The September Issue," Grace's poeticism, her sensitivity, her humanity, and her honesty all shine through like pure gold. She's a real visionary in an industry that sometimes jettisons artistry for the bottom line (of course…
Fashion in 2007 was at a relative apex of economic and cultural power while being aesthetically in a paranoid defensive crouch, waiting for the crash everyone knows is coming, living day-to-day in a jittery compulsive ptsd haze. one of the things i respect and love most about 00's fashion is its brutalist disco armor aesthetic even as i fear its inevitable return. still i will take color blocking and hostile glitter every day of the week over wan distressed 'faded' rugby gear, waltons fetishization, and abusive dockers. there is something horrible in me that loves low-rise bootcut jeans to maxx-out tramp stamps fading into the return of the empire waisted jean that would dominate 2010's fashion, furry boots, little jackets,…
I love Anna Wintour with my entire heart and I WILL hurt every one of her sibilings for ever making fun of her for being the editor of Vogue
Grace Coddington calling up the retouchers to make sure they don't retouch the cameraman's stomach in the shot with Caroline Trentini against Anna Wintour's instructions is a next level boss move
Surprisingly fascinating. It showed as much of Anna Wintour's neuroses as her freakish drive and will, which I appreciated. Grace Coddington is the star of this movie, though. It's so hilarious to me that that much discussed Vogue issue came out sort of meh.
I've always found the world of fashion interesting, not because im particularly fashionable but because I just cant comprehend the amount of money people make from pieces of fabric. After learning about this documentary from mye nglish teacher I thought id give it a watch and if im being honest im still confused at the amount of power and money people can get from such a strange occupation.
This was so fascinating, but the entire time I was watching it, I couldn't help but think about how this is the same magazine that dedicated an entire 52-page special issue to Kendall Jenner.
It's interesting to watch this now, 10 years after it was released (and 12 after the issue they were filming!). So much has changed culturally, with publishing, with fashion, and the fashion industry is no longer a mysterious thing hidden behind a curtain that the public never gets to see. So many of the people in this film became public names, there have been endless reality shows dealing with every aspect of the business, and magazines are a dying artform.
I found this movie entertaining, mostly because of Grace and Leon (I highly recommend the film about him - The Gospel According to Leon), but it's certainly not informative in this day and age. It really just made me crave a follow-up so I can see what they're doing to adapt in a time when fashion is available to everyone (at least in an informational sense), and we all know what goes on behind the scenes.
"IT'S A FAMINE OF BEAUTY, HONEY! MY EYES ARE STARVING FOR BEAUTY!"
ALT is an icon tbh
I really liked this movie cause it showed the side of "Miranda Pristley" in addition to the villain that everyone describes. Anna is a woman who does her job with excellence and a firm pulse, if she were a man he 'ld be just "professional, a great executive" but as she's a woman they prefer to use the words "witch, vixen". She does what has to be done and goes to great lengths, cause if something goes wrong it’s her name that’s at stake, not the guys who didn’t do their part right; It’s a team, but whenever something goes wrong, the culprit is only one. I think Anna is an amazing person, she accepts when she makes mistakes, she…
I would kill a few newborn babies for Grace Coddington and every shoot she did for this issue
eh, some awkward moments. there were some fun ones though but i probably wouldn’t watch it again unless it was a rerun on HBO that i accidentally stumbled upon while cleaning my home on a sunday afternoon
Trying to garner inspiration for my MA by binge-watching a shit load of fashion docs.
Also, can someone appoint Grace Coddington as Editor-In-Chief of American Vogue???? A creative powerhouse.
Is it really a coverlines meeting if you’re not seeing who can come up with the best pun?
