Everything from a technical and design standpoint feels so intentional and idiosyncratic, Kubrick at complete control of his craft. And yet, I have no idea what the hell any of it means. And ya know, I’m okay with it.
Those performances too, Nicholson walks the line between genuinely menacing and laughable ridiculousness better than anybody.
And Shelly Duvall goes toe to toe with Nicholson, giving an equally over the top, but still believable performance.
Kubrick’s treatment of her, whether it was for the betterment of her performance or not feels unacceptable and unnecessary but at the same time, she is amazing.
Probably my favorite of Kubrick’s work (although I’ve got more to see). It’s a classic for a reason, the sense of dread that’s present from the moment that music starts... unparalleled 😫
