For once, my complaint with a film featuring Kate McKinnon isn't Kate. At least, she's not the biggest issue. Mila is somehow the most watered down and bland version of a caricature she can possibly be. this is the most generic version of her Bad Moms role. Now, about Kate. Kate projects a form of performative art comedy. it's abstract, it's involved, it requires your feedback. It doesn't exactly work in movies. Don't get me wrong, she can do all forms of comedy. But left to her own devices, she's going to go there, and it doesn't attach to film very well. She needs a solid scripted base, and she needs a strong soundboard to bounce off of. This film has a decent script, but Mila doesn't do the bounceback that Kate needs as solidly as she could. I'll probably watch the sequel, but grouchily because this is barely as good as it should have been.
