This film was recommended by one of my favorite Youtube channels but I didn't find it nearly as enjoyable as it was told to be. The plot tended to lose focus on the original story and I feel like I was watching random scenes one after the other, which is a shame given that the cast is made of, well, the two greatest actors of French cinema, probably.

An excuse to have Jean Gabin and Louis de Funès act opposite each other--they had been in the same films before but not both in lead roles, so this must have been like the "Heat" of late '60s French cinema. De Funès plays an art dealer that spots a Modigliani tattoo on Gabin's back. Jean Gabin is an eccentric ex-legionnaire that refuses to sell it--the rest is wacky nonsensical '60s French comedy. It almost works because of Gabin's real life antipathy for De Funès, but it never really takes off, maybe for the same reason.

Eins haben fast alle Louis-de -Funes-Filme gemeinsam (die Kohlköpfe mal ausgenommen). Lustig waren sie nur in meiner Kindheit. Schaut man sich die Filme heute an, fragt man sich, wieso man damals gelacht hat. Das ändert auch nicht die Tatsache, dass er diesmal mit Jean Gabin eine echte Granate als Kompagnon hat.

Kunsthändler Balduin entdeckt zufällig auf dem Rücken des Grafen Legrain Ein wertvolles Tattoo und setzt alle Hebel in Bewegung, ihm dieses Kunstwerk abzuluchsen.
Den hatte ich irgendwie besser in Erinnerung. Es gibt zwar jede Menge lustige Szenen und einige sind auch echt zum Brüllen komisch, aber manchmal wird der Bogen einfach überspannt. Was mich aber am meisten störte, war das abrupte Ende, welches den ganzen Film ziemlich unrund daher kommen lässt und die Geschichte dann irgendwie nur unbefriedigend auflöst.
Nein, schlecht ist der Film nicht, weil Louis de Funes hier mit Jean Gabin einen nicht weniger cholerischen Gegenspieler hat und die beiden prächtig miteinander harmonieren, aber es gibt bessere de Funes Filme.
Der Film war seiner Zeit irgendwie voraus. Amüsant…

When a movie reunites the greatest and most iconic French actor: Jean Gabin and the funniest and most popular of the day: Louis de Funès, you expect fireworks of laughs resulting from the interactions between these two messieurs, but in the case of "The Tattoo", it's almost on the level of an armadillo's fart. There are a few funny moments popping up here and there, the film had a great visual look and a jazzy score, but its drought of gags makes it one of the least rewatchable De Funès movies again, there are some good scenes but hey, you can find them on Youtube and life is too precious to endure this, even for the sake of nostalgia.
