What an absolutely delightful film. I had heard really great things about The Two Popes and it had been on my watchlist since TIFF last year but I finally got around to watching it, and I see why people loved it so much. Two absolute powerhouse actors, directed with such confidence, paired with a brilliant script, and some of the best production design I've seen in some time. The two hour runtime flies by thanks to the outstanding performances from the leads. Anthony McCarten has seemingly done the impossible: made me care about religious figures.
Also, I want to give a big shout out to the sound design in the film. You wouldn't think a movie like this would have memorable sound design, but you'd be wrong. There's so many brilliant little touches going on throughout the film, and it makes truly great use of the surrounds.
I loved it.
