Notes on The Watermelon Woman (1996):
+ The Watermelon Woman seamlessly blends meta commentary and fiction.* If you’re interested in the concept of representation, the way we write the past, and/or our obligation to remember obscured histories, this comes with my highest recommendation. Hell, if you just want a great film, this comes with my highest recommendation.
+ Even though it’s more sincere and earnest than an absolute laugh riot, I haven’t seen a film with this effortless a humor in a while.
* The Watermelon Woman is the definition of multi-layered - step aside Inception (2010). To fully comprehend its argument, I’ll have to read scholarly articles folx a lot smarter than me have written.
