Theatre Camp
perfect chaser after infinity pool. funniest music mockumentary since popstar. basically a waiting for guffman remake, which is such a good thing. instant favorite for me, very few jokes don’t land. why is this the only movie at sundance to make me cry?
due to my little to no interest in theater i was really surprised at how much i loved this. among other things it feels like glee meets wet hot american summer, but thankfully unlike glee, (a piece of cursed media which remains a black hole of despair), is pleasantly good natured while never sacrificing its biting sense of humor. i truly couldn’t stop laughing. entire cast tore up every scene, (ayo!!! PATTI!!!) but molly gordon, that’s my GIRL… “get off the stick… get off the stick…”
Lmao loved this so much - I feel like only theatre kids truly know how to point fingers at how annoying they are themselves, the comedy here is sharp and biting, never saccharine. So clever. All these kids are so good (one from John Mulaney’s Sack Lunch Bunch and you can tell) and, holy hell, Molly Gordon!!! Ben Platt and Noah Galvin too are more restrained than I’ve seen them and just so in command of their megawatt personalities. I will rewatch this so many times, long live the mockumentary, protect all the theatre kids, let me be best friends with everyone pleaaase
Whether I was once a theater kid or not, I am here to tell you THEATER CAMP is a pure and utter delight. A mostly improvised, joyous celebration of theater arts, where any moment can become a musical number or form of creative expression. An infectious comedy filmed in the style of Christopher Guest with a pitch perfect ensemble. Bravo to everyone involved. You reminded this theater loving geek why this art form is so special.
Really fun and light comedy. Improvisational feel. Gave me some Waiting For Guffman vibes. (I love that movie, btw). It’s probably the perfect Jimmy Tatro role. 🎶Girl with an open Snapple🎶 rocks.
Fun watch for the theater / musical lovers out there.

2. John Lithgow and Kevin Bacon in Footloose
We're not even done the first round of Sundance watches and we had to hit round 2 of Theater Camp.
Incredibly busy and filled with good characters but it all works. Definitely one of the best movies I’ve seen at Sundance in general because nearly every scene has something you can laugh at. I don’t know how I could get more of this but I’m going to need more from everyone here. Molly Gordon, Noah Galvin and Ayo Edebiri were some highlights but this was just everything all around. Maybe another mockumentary with the same people? I don’t know?? Ugh I gotta see this in a theater oh my god*
*The credits having more scenes is everything. Bring THAT back
Theater Camp is hilarious and heartfelt in equal measure, perfectly paced, and packed with laugh-a-minute gags and colorful characters (the kids are instant stars). Molly Gordon should run the world, Ayo Edebiri’s reactions are everything, and put Patti Harrison in more movies!!!
