World Music Day and hence replugging a post I wrote on thalaivARR's birthday earlier this year! My day is incomplete without listening to a song of yours and I hope your musical fragrance forever remains as fresh as a newly blossomed Roja, Rahman sir!
"Chinna Chinna Aasai" was the first song composed by ARR and along with the Sunrise shot at the beginning of the song, also began the rise of ARR who has always been a ray-of-light since then and went on to become the 'Mozart of Madras'!
Every MR-ARR album is in a league of its own and it's tough to choose one, but if there's a gun to my head and I had to pick…
wasn't expecting this to be such a straightforward action/adventure comedy, probably 90% of the runtime is spent riding away from trouble on a train or a bus or a cart, the rest of it on some tragic romance. i loved the simplicity of it, the constant forward motion, the sweet goofy guys and femme fatale/hysterical village girl are so charming, the songs are incredible, and of course it looks gorgeous. wholesome bros <3
mani ratnam and ram gopal varma action caper collab; kind of long-winded, but it's hard not to appreciate mani's distinct flavor of straightforward down-n-dirty masala, from his signature eye for light to the songs (very early rahman featuring his much punchier synthpop sound synced to blisteringly fast choreography) to the genuinely dangerous practical stuntwork. the traintop fights here make chaiyya chaiyya seem like nothing.
long chase sequences, a large sum of money, automobiles exploding and/or flying about, exquisite song-and-dance set pieces (among other things, some of ar rahman's very greatest compositions), all of which somewhat inexplicably lead to a moment of heartbreaking delicacy between the three lovers (that is eventually diffused with effortless comic grace). i love this film!
such a fuckin blast goddamn. a bit overlong but its swashbuckling energy and really beautiful depiction of a love triangle work well to counteract that. in the last half hour especially it outdoes mission impossible and buster keaton. second greatest train action movie behind unstoppable.
i gotta gеt it together (you dig?)
i'm livin' my life like a rebel (what?)
they tried to lock me in a kennel (what?)
i beat the case, it was simple (what?)
fresh out of court, yeah (yeah)
jump in the porsche, yeah (what?)
slide through the hood, yeah (what?)
everything good, yeah (yeah)
whole lotta mob shit (what?)
whole lotta mob (what?), whole lotta mob shit (what? what? yeah!)
An ambitious film which just falls short of greatness. The soundtrack is astounding and one of A.R. Rahman's top five soundtracks of the Nineties. My personal favourite track is the irresistibly catchy " Kannum Kannum" with the slick dance moves. The problem is other than the two main leads none of the other characters are interesting especially the legendary singer who i feel was terribly miscast. The length is over indulgent and gets a tad too melodramatic in the third act. It's a fun road cum buddy movie but deserved a better antagonist. Still it's definitely worth a watch.
structure in its own right is kind of repetitive and plodding (plot point... chase sequence.. plot point... chase sequence... shot of vehicle flying through air in slow-motion... plot point... musical number) but the succession of actual events is pleasant. a sleepy afternoon viewing pace. glowing shots, but also an excess of masala melodrama for better and worse. what's the difference between a spawling epic and a very long road trip movie? fucking Nothing.
SPB & Malaysia Vasudevan.
This was a hoot throughly enjoyed every bit and whatte fantastic album.
various little flaws (repetitions, inconsistencies, dorkiness) that stack up and slightly overstay their welcome on a rewatch. but consider the following: this movie is cute, and i like it

they have tried to make a Hollywood type comedy action film but haven't succeeded much
