Yes, the clothes are dated. Yes, the music is dated. Yes, the child actors are poor at times. But, no-one can deny that Sidney Poitier is a thoroughly engaging screen presence and that this movie has moments that will cut to the emotional core.
It is idealistic and heartfelt, and the film longs for the notion that all of us can do a little better to be more than we expect of ourselves, particularly when that expectation is already of a low bar.
