There are wholesome friendship and pretty romance scenes, but goddamn was Tolkien painfully average. I constantly found myself distracted by Hugh Jackman's handsome presence in The Greatest Showman, which the flight played on the little tvs as I watched Tolkien on my computer lmao.
Tolkien has a weak narrative structure (with unnecessary flashforwards, not surprisingly), and it unevenly balances various facets of his life (writing, language creation, friendships, love life, family) without giving depth or resolution to any of them. It barely even shows him creating his famous works, which I'm sadly not familiar with but would've really liked to see. In the end, this film makes Tolkien into another British prodigy white boy in period film, and there are many better ones out there.
