This is my first time seeing M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable and I can safely say it is leaps and bounds far better than I ever imagined. I saw "Spilt" for a while with no clue it's connected to "Unbreakable" so I was wondering about one scene. Now I catched "Unbreakable" up and liked it even more. One reason is the new interpretation and understatement of a superhero who does not save the entire planet rather than the people from next door.The camera is perfection to me. With all the superhero bombardments going on in the cinemas at the moment, I decided it was time to rewatch Shyamalan's take on the superhero genre and see if it holds up. Boy, did it ever.

I have always felt that Shyamalan is a better storyteller than a director. If I look at all his films, I think this film strikes the best balance. He has written one of the best origin stories ever and manages to direct it with perfect pacing and a distinct visual style, one that I enjoyed quite a bit.

Unbreakable is a great film. Its spec script was written during the filming of The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson in mind for the roles of the two leads. It was sold to Disney for a whopping 5 million dollars, which was a record deal at that time. Meio absurdo tudo que esse filme consegue fazer com tão pouco. A mise-en-scène do Shyamalan aqui deve ser uma das mais enxutas, e de alguma forma rola uma economia na decupagem que é quase um exercício pro A Vila, especialmente na maneira como ele resolve tudo muito bem com pouquíssimos planos. Uma certa liberdade cênica da câmera no espaço que é sempre evidente. Um risco mesmo, vide a recusa por contra-planos, o uso muito preciso de câmera na mão, de lentes grande angular, sem falar na própria dinâmica dos planos-sequências mesmo.

In one scene of Unbreakable, the son of David Dunn (the film's protagonist) aims a gun at his father, echoing a scene from Superman II, where Lois Lane does the same to Clark Kent to prove he's Superman. While that scene is light, this one is dead serious - it's almost as if we're in the middle of a domestic disturbance.

M Night Shyamalan brought Clark down to the real world. A person against whose eyes bullets would crush would not be looked at in the same slow-motion glory here. I miss Bruce Willis giving actual performances. I can’t remember the last time he played a character that wasn’t a grumpy tough guy that sleepily mutters all of his lines. Bruce Willis in Unbreakable is nuanced, fragile, soft-spoken, and actually giving a shit. It was good to see this version of Willis.

I still like this movie a lot even rewatching it after all these years. Shyamalan was making unique and interesting superhero movies way before it became a thing. The James Newton Howard score is amazing. I don't have much else to say, take the below as just a nitpick rant I wanted to get off my chest.
