2001 Directed by Christian Frei
Documentary about war photographer James Nachtwey, considered by many the greatest war photographer ever.
Fotógrafo de Gueera, Fotógrafo de guerra
I think we can all agree that media practitioners who put their lives on the line in the genuinely passionate pursuit of truth deserve to be given proper recognition. But should we really glorify journalists who go to conflict-stricken areas as some sort of messianic savior? There's also this constant distance between Nachtwey and his subjects throughout the film that visually represents his role as an outsider to the conflict, which is ironic given how he was described as an on-ground photographer. Too poverty and war porn I almost puked. And PLEASE let those families grieve in private! Don't exploit their misery for your news company's "social relevance" facade. This type of pseudo-immersive joirnalism will never empower the marginalized and hence will never change the world.
Lol it's so funny how white people can go to war torn (usually majority world) countries and take pictures of their suffering and then sell it back to rich white people for their money!! so revolutionary!!!! literally fuck off w this imperialism & neo-colonialist poverty porn lmao
This is an incredible look at an incredible man, and one of my favorite films ever. Natchwey is beyond interesting and the film doesn't candy coat anything. The "camera-on-a-camera" is brilliant and the rest of the film is made with a reverent, journalistic sensibility that is necessitated by the sobering subject matter. Beyond highly recommended.
Fuck me, show this to everyone who thinks war is legitimate. They'll think otherwise afterwards... Huge respect for Nachtwey for doing what he does. I'd quit after a day.
A powerful and insightful exploration of Nachtwey's work and motivations that puts us right there beside him in order to offer a glimpse of what it must be like to risk your life to bring those images to the public, arguing for the importance of small actions if we want to change things.

"Its like theater but instead of being in the audience, I was on the stage and the script was being written minute by minute as the action happened"
This is not only about war photography, about the horror of war and why documenting it is important. It is also about human connection, about what counts as accomplichment and perseption. About displaying and communicating.
A movie to watch for those who are mainly interested in seeing more of James Nachtway’s work or rather the persona that lies behind the work.
If you don’t know about him, maybe watch something else.

"If war is an effort to negate humanity, then photography can be perceived as the opposite of war."
A sobering movie in that it draws attention in how we get and view worldwide suffering with a genuine passion to show it
“Advertisers are tired of having their products displayed next to images of human tragedy. They feel that it somehow detracts from the saleability of their products.”
James Nachtwey’s zen monk persona, juxtaposed with the proto-GoPro camera POV that makes up much of the film is mesmerizing. The horrors of war obviously weigh heavily on him, but his humanity and empathy shines through like a spotlight, even if that spotlight is shining on sights we’d rather not see.
As a photographer I was endlessly fascinated by his camera POV. We see him really work his shots. Every exposure adjustment, every restless twitch left and right, looking for focus or better composition. The tension of his shutter finger, then the sudden rapid trip of his shutter when he feels that decisive moment.
I can’t say I enjoyed this film, I t’s subject is deeply disturbing. But I loved it. It’s a bright guilty world indeed.
