I love that when Kevin Costner was King Shit of Hollywood he wasn’t satisfied making regular old movies. No, he had to make multiple three-hour hybrid-genre epic fantasies. Waterworld, the Postman, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Wyatt Earp, Dances With Wolves…he dreamed big, and he worked his ass off to realize those visions. And though he often seemed miscast in his own films, I have to admire the sheer fun and playfulness of his big movies. The action, stunts, practical effects, explosions, costumes, casts, the wild stories—the guy is out to entertain, and that’s exactly what he does.
Yeah, Waterworld plays like Mad Max on water, but if that’s not an intriguing premise for a movie I don’t know what is. It’s a riveting action epic. Silly, over-the-top, far too long, nonsensical, at times—yet completely entertaining and fun in that big budget Hollywood style that made 90s cinema so legendary.
