me watching this movie is the equivalent of the picture of steve buscemi holding a skateboard saying "how do you do, fellow kids"
Essentially “White Privilege: The Movie,” Elizabeth Wood’s fire-breathing debut is an adrenalized shot of ecstasy and entitlement, a fully committed cautionary tale that’s able to follow through on its premise because — like the remarkable young actress who plays its heroine — the film is unafraid of being utterly loathsome. And make no mistake, while the madness of her misadventures is captivating from start to finish, you will hate the titular “white girl.” But it’s what Wood and her star do with that hate that makes their collaboration special, these two rising super talents manipulating your vitriol with the grace of a contortionist and the recklessness of a tornado.
In unspecific terms -- because, sadly, I don't have a lot of time on my hands today -- I found this to contradict itself, double-deal and borderline self-destruct in its attempts to comment on class disparity and racial entitlement. I respect the fact that those involved were attempting to delve into the subject matter; I just can't help but think that a problematic attempt to investigate certain political topics is more harmful than leaving said topics unexamined. With that being said, the film does have merit. I know many people just like Leah -- even people who have died as a result of such a lifestyle -- which kept me uncomfortably engaged, despite finding Saylor to be massively miscast (Brian…

Studio: Alright, Beth. Tell us what you've got in store for us.
Elizabeth Wood: Let's do a movie about a white girl! I've got the script ready and all!
Studio: But there are already thousands of movies about white girls and zero about greygender otherkins. What makes your movie idea worth spending money on? What's it about anyway?
Elizabeth Wood: Well, it's about a white middle class girl who moves to a lower-class neighborhood ...
Studio: Go on.
Elizabeth Wood: ... and, shortly after her arrival, falls in love with a Latino Ken doll!
Studio: Excellent, Beth.
Elizabeth Wood: Oh, and the lead gives a guy on her job a blow job the very same day…
With sincere emotion and a fast pacing, this partly crime drama, partly romance about naive, reckless and by sexuality drifted youth is emotionally charged, tragic and chaotic.
It shifts from one situation into the other and although the world as depicted as in this film does certainly feel very real and moving, the plot leaves a few holes here and there and has developments too fast to be entirely believable. It doesn't allow us to get a complete insight within the lives of those characters, and although the glimpses we get sure are compelling, it still feels like some important parts are left out or just forgotten to integrate within the script.
The thematics are strong, and for a huge…
A friend of mine was told he would like this film based on his own fondness for the films of Andrea Arnold and Harmony Korine which set myself up to become interested on the spot. The moment he came out saying he wasn't a fan, however, only made me all the more skeptical about why the recommendation was made. It was not long enough I decided to watch the film where I had failed to see a connection between the recommendations but also one where I was so repulsed by what I was witnessing. That's only, however, a small testament in describing how truly terrible White Girl is, for it was all around an unpleasant experience.
If the title, "white…
Elizabeth Wood’s debut feature is very reminiscent of Larry Clark’s work in its frank, shocking and graphic depiction of young lives, and is perhaps surprisingly, almost as leery in its gaze. While this tale of a girl, fresh out of college and with a taste for narcotics, has nothing new to say and treads an inevitable course, the whole unravelling of events is still more than enough to sustain the slender running time.
