So now that I've watched this as an adult, I've come to the conclusion that Grandpa Joe is the fucking worst.
1. He could have worked, but he chose not to. He acted like he had the inability to walk and get out of bed, but he could and would rather have Charlie and his mom work to support the ENTIRE family (including the three other dead beats in the bed).

I forgot that the first third of this movie is sketch comedy about the whole world being obsessed with going to a chocolate factory. It's very winning. Feels like something they would cut if they made it today in order to make more room for John Oliver to riff in his role as "Charlie's teacher." The teacher they have in there now is really special. As a kid I always just assumed he was a famous English comedian who I had somehow missed. I was partially right (David Bartley was in Krull!) but I stand by my eight year old self's opinion that this guy deserved a bigger career than he got.

"What must that factory smell like?" I asked my roommate as we watched the opening credits. Chocolate powder like flowing clouds, folding sheets of chocolate rippling, little kisses coming from a machine, the whole sequence is more evocative to me than the most erotic moment in the most erotic film. It demands bodily reaction. It seeps from the television screen and charges my blood with sweetness. It's not the most delicious moment in the film, though.
I knew, going in, that this film would not meet my standards. I knew that the Oompa Loompas are offensive, exploitation of little people for the sake of exoticism and a horrifying pro-slavery metaphor that is not at all masked by their clownish appearances.…

I watch a lot of children’s movies with my daughters. Some are fine; most are absolute garbage. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a comparative miracle. It has a sincere and heartfelt message in favor of imagination and generosity (and against greed and gluttony) and simultaneously is filled with some of the bleakest and darkest jokes about capitalism and life in general (not to mention repeated attempted child murder) in any Hollywood movie ever.
Some of the gags, particularly the first act while the world is hunting for golden tickets, are so sharp they play like scenes from The Simpsons, a show that wouldn’t debut for another 18 years. Plus the songs are wonderful, Gene Wilder’s performance is equally warm…
