For some reason, Lithuania fell off of my Letterboxd Green Map (despite it showing that I had watched Chernobyl) so I cued up this movie.
You should understand that this movie has a very narrow audience. You need to be more than just a casual fan of international cycling. If you are not, this movie will fall extremely flat for you. I think that I am just enough of a fan to appreciate this movie. The Domestique is a job that gets little credit but requires all of the work and dedication that every team member puts in and a selflessness to put the team over individual glory.
This is their story...and, if you really love cycling, you'll enjoy it.
Meditation on the daily sacrifice of the sport’s team workers (water carriers, domestics, ‘gregarios’, ‘Sancho Panzas’ of professional Cycling). A cruel world for most of the man of peloton. What motivates them about being a gregario, someone who will probably never see the spotlight of a podium ceremony during a whole career? Is that worth all the hard work and all the pain? The heart of the chaos and its consequences on human being. Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno. Welcome in the Cycling world. Stars and Watercarriers (1974) vibes.

If you’re not proposing during a bike tour what are you doing with your life?
as I get more into cycling I’m becoming more interested int the weird subcultures
domestiques! it’s a tough life
This documentary tells various stories of the participants in the bicycle race Tour of Italy. It focuses on the non-stars, the members of teams who are useful as support troops for the leader who may eventually win the event (there's even an Italian word for them: "gregarios". ) Also featured are the medical teams who travel along the peloton giving aid to riders injured in accidents, who are usually back on their bikes and suffering. The film has some good action photography; but this is really mostly of interest to fans of the sport. It's pretty grueling to watch.
The madness of the world inhabited by the domestiques or the "gregario" at the Giro d'Italia. As with any cycling documentary, the scenic views and the cyclists' training preparation both off-season and on and the fears that these people have as well. For those that remember the 2014 Giro - you'll have a nice reminder of being shown Jos van Emden's marriage proposal!
