the best Sundance movie ever made about a widowed leper and an orphan named Obama riding a (GREAT) donkey across Egypt in search of family and EMOTIONS. of all the movies to feel like Beasts of the Southern Wild… the emotional through-line is deeply obvious stuff, but the strength these characters find in each other is touching all the same.
soundtrack so good the dude next to me tried to Shazam it during the movie. yes, because Shazam can always identify movie scores *during their Cannes world premieres.* ANYWAY, i had to murder him and now i run my letterboxd from a prison cell in Nice. very chill.
After the death of his wife, a man living in a leprosy colony decides to set out on a journey in search of the family that once abandoned him. As he wanders through rural Egypt with his white donkey, Beshay experiences moving and bitter moments, and is joined by an orphan boy with whom he develops a unique friendship. Yomeddine is about the return to the origins and the past in search of answers, about finding freedom within ourselves and embark on new roads. It is a modest and well-intentioned film that transmits warmth and humanity while director Abu Bakr Shawky offers a portrait of poverty, discrimination, and marginalized people in contemporary Egypt. Yomeddine is a tribute to life and resilience of the human spirit.
Unforgiving reality and infectious optimism, embracing amidst the desolate landscape of meaning. It's a damn shame this won't get a bigger audience. See it if you can find it.

Not sure which is more bewildering: that Cannes gave this sentimental crowdpleaser a shot at the Palme d'Or, or that Toronto didn't give it a shot at the People's Choice Award. (Wouldn't have beaten Green Book, but still.) It's actually not nearly as mawkish as it might have been, thanks in large part to Rady Gamal's quietly dignified presence; a professional actor in makeup would likely have felt compelled to emphasize various aspects of leprosy that Gamal, having lived with them for most of his life, long ago internalized and can all but ignore, at least to the extent that the script allows. Indeed, I briefly thought I might be watching an Egyptian version of The Straight Story, with…
A surprisingly entertaining story of the misadventures of a leper and orphan boy in Egypt. Cool original score, heartfelt story, really really enjoyed this film. Don't know just had a good time with this.
Wonderful, humane and heartwarming journey. Strong performances although the kid could have been better. I didn't like few scenes and there were few lines of the dialogue that felt different from the rest of the movie. But overall, I really enjoyed it. It is well directed with gorgeous cinematography, excellent editing and amazing score!
Fairly positive this is the first Egyptian film I’ve seen. It was refreshing to expose myself to a culture I am not very familiar with. It’s a pretty powerful story and while it’s not the most original film, it does offer a unique perspective you don’t see often. Biggest issue is that there’s not enough time spent to explore the themes and ideas presented throughout. It all feels very disjointed and rushed. Score is overused as well. Got real annoying hearing the same track over and over. It’s an insanely low budget film and it is well acted and all but I just didn’t really get much out of this. David Lynch’s The Elephant Man tackles many similar themes and is far more emotionally resonant. I will say the climax is superb. Very well executed. I feel like this would have worked better as a short honestly now that I think of it.
this is a road movie in all the best ways, fuck egyptian mainstream cinema, i want more of THIS

I've just found one more scene to add to my favorite dancing scenes playlist and one more soundtrack to be obsessed over. Yet it did broke my heart to see how heart-warming this was.
