The ultimate undead tropical jam. 91 minutes of Fulci travelogue mixed with iconic grotesque gutmunching synched to the metronomic soundwaves of tribal beats and pulsating Fabio Frizzi, as Fulci immediately drops us into a Voodoo Undead Nightmare—filled with sinewy flesh ripping, shark fighting, headshot hospital deaths, Molotov cocktails, THE eye gouge of the century, throat shredding, and rising conquistadors... slow boiled before overflowing with a cataclysmic non stop chaotic armageddon final act as the world goes down like a sinking ship. 

There may be better undead cinema, but for me this is the ultimate Zombie movie and my favorite the sub genre has to offer—with Fulci’s zombies as my preferred look as far as stomach churning repulsive mud caked flesh gobblers go... decayed worm food ramshacklers... I can smell the rot. 

Legendary.

Zombie Flesh Eaters relatively suffers a tad bit most specifically from a deficiently paced outset (which fortunately gets better as it goes along) and having several bland characters throughout its duration. However, what it lacked in those elements more than makes up for it with the film boasting an abundant amount of remarkably brutal practical gore, exceptionally grotesque zombie makeup effects, an incredible tropical atmosphere that is full of dread, and a memorable soundtrack that goes rather well in hand with the film's dreadful ambiance.

A cult-favorite for a reason because of these noted attributes, although a couple of downsides keep Zombie Flesh Eaters from being one of the best in the zombie subgenre of horror as I see it.

A remarkable cult classic by Lucio Fulci that is as influential to the zombie genre as George A. Romero! Graphic Gore that would make a maggot puke! Hellacious looking zombies! Complete with an unbelievable underwater scene that will rock your world! (And it couldn't have been achieved without horse meat and sedatives!)

other than the much talked about shark vs. zombie fight and the sun-stroked tribal island vibes fulci isn't really reinventing the zombie genre here but his sensibility of slow-mounting dread, borderline surreal horror setpieces and too tangible gore fx works really well for it. he's patient with the reanimated movements as they rise from the dirt and heavily focuses on how repulsive they look, smell and feel. he rubs our faces in the gushing blood and torn limbs, and the wide-angle lens close-ups of their faces make sure there's no rotted texture, or wiggling worm we don't see. also, has fulci ever seen an actresses eye that he didn't then want to viciously gouge out with various objects lying around the set?

Ah, the mighty Zombie Flesh Eaters aka Zombie, aka Zombi 2, (and apparently) aka Woodoo. So good to see you looking so well my old friend. Blu Ray suits you. Enough with the pleasantries.

While sprinting Zombies were briefly exciting back in the early 2000's, the shuffle Zombie will always reign supreme and this is a shining example of the genre. A feast of bloody, maggot ridden close ups, detailed effects work, well executed and imaginative set pieces all scored appropriately by a plodding synthesised soundtrack.

To boot, the acting is uniformly excellent, the camera work professional and the mood suitably foreboding.

This is the most successful of Fulci's back catalogue I've seen. The simple, linier story make it accessible, intelligible and ultimately as entertaining as hell. I also obviously appreciate the brutally downbeat ending and legendary gore sequences which still happily pack a seriously sickening punch to the guts.

Bravo maestro, bravo.

One giant leap for zombiekind and horror in general, bringing a new focus on bodily destruction and carnage. But it's also a look back, (kind of) reclaiming zombies for their tropical voodoo origins from the atomic-age ghouls they became under Romero. Punishing, but you probably deserve it.

My first Fulci.
The make up and gore effects are without a doubt the best part of the movie, especially when you consider this movie is from 1979. The setting takes place on a tropical island which is also a thing I admire, even though I think the scenes around Manhattan were a bit better. The storyline and acting were kinda weak and it takes a while before things really get started, the whole buildup is quite long which wasn’t really necessary, but the payoff is finally quite decent which brings that claustrophobic feeling of being surrounded. Liked this one by Fulci more than most of Romero’s movies.

I don't know... sometimes a movie is just bad-ass.

What is all this about the dead coming back to life again and... having to be killed a second time? I mean, what the hell's going on here?

Picked up the Blue Underground 4K scan Blu-ray for Fulci's seminal masterpiece, Zombie Flesh Eaters, and man, I cannot get over the improvement in detail.

All of Tisa's freckles! McCulloch's shiny, balding pate! Auretta's areolas! Olga's eyeball! Wood grain! Sheet threads! Skin pores! All in glorious extra pixelization!

I must have this damn film on every format, multiple copies, but I'm fully convinced this currently sits as the definitive edition available on the market. 3 discs. A slew of extras. The CD soundtrack. Booklet. Lenticular cover (I got the eyeball cover coz I have the damn zombie head soooooo many times on other editions). Just such great overall value.

Fantastic film. Fantastic release.

"Zombie" or "Zombi 2" or "Zombie Flesh Eaters" or
"Naked Scuba Shark Attack Zombie Voodoo"

Probably the most grotesque depiction of zombies I’ve ever seen, and I dig it! Contains some truly unforgettable scenes, plus the most satisfying squelch sound effect whenever the doctor takes a head shot. Perfect ending!

Legendary. A slow boil into chaos with no sign of hope given by the final radio transmission.

Bit of an odd movie. I watched it while stoned so I opted into watching it dubbed in English, which was a bad idea. Subbed is definitely the way to go as the subtitles indicate the English dub leaves out a lot of dialogue.

It's a bit of a slow burn, but for a movie that's 42 years old, it's remarkable. It has a scary feel like Cannibal Holocaust, while instilling you with the same sense of dread Dawn of the Dead does. The story was a bit silly but everything else was amazing. The effects when the zombies bite and even the design of the zombies is like something you'd see at least 20-30 years later. It's a really great movie.

All in all, Italians are the masters of horror flicks. Give this a watch ASAP.

The best zombie-film.

I'd seen the two most iconic scenes before: the shark fight and the eye piercing (not sure where, probably on some 100 greatest horror movies countdown on tv or something). Those turned out to be the two best bits. Unfortunately, I found this to be the weakest of the three Fulci films I've seen - and I wasn't a huge fan of The Beyond or Don't Torture a Duckling either, they were at least interesting though, with much better pacing and imagery. There's something about his rhythm, his widescreen compositions, his constant filming in daylight, all the things that his fans find hypnotic I just find tedious. He isn't as poetic as Argento, and he isn't as straightforwardly scuzzy or gory as someone like Lenzi or Deodato. I may give one of his gialli a try next, but my expectations aren't high.

Italian Gore/Splatter greatest from the godfather of gore Mr Lucia Fulci! What’s not to love about this awesome movie, amazing soundtrack, gore, atmosphere! Got lots of iconic moments and is easily one of the very best of the Video Nasties era! Bonafide classic that I can watch anytime.
