2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey ★★★★★

Still mysteriously of its time, ahead of its time, and out of time. The only film to utilize the full spectrum of silence; its emptiness, how deafening it can be, and how it can pull us into the unknown further than any light show or photographic trickery. Classical music offers comfort, pride, and great triumph. A wailing chorus alerts us to the uncanny, the alien, the anomalous. Within and without it all, threaded through every image, every sound, and every wonder, there is a thrilling silence warning us, with the faintest glimmer of optimism, to what lies beyond the infinite.

Also, HAL terminating the rest of the crew right after Bowman "rescues" Poole is the ultimate power move.
