  • Host

Host stayed short enough that it didn’t overstay its welcome, but long enough to build up tension. Even if the plot was thin, sometimes the scares are all you need in a horror film.

    Tokyo Twilight

While there isn't any part of Tokyo Twilight that doesn't feel like Ozu, the melodrama is more pronounced than some of his other films and the societal message more apparent. This doesn't make it a bad film, it's just not as good as his best work. The composition is perfect, even when his camera breaks the line, and his characters are often level without ever being flat. The difference here is the drama isn't something I would want to live in, unlike the world he created in his color films.

    House of Bamboo

The first Hollywood film shot in Japan was luckily a Samuel Fuller noir. Fuller is unusual in his respectable portrayal of the Japanese at the time. This was especially interesting after recently watching his film The Crimson Kimono from a few years later, showing a continuation of Fuller’s interest in Japanese culture from the American perspective. The beautiful photography is almost out of place in Fuller’s low budget productions, but it only enhances the time and place as a setting.

    The Second Mother

The Second Mother builds the tension through subtle glances and perfect performances. It creates a sense of understanding in the collision of family and what is expected of them. This is the act of nature verses nurture with the ongoing battle happening long after the story ends.
