The Invisible Man

The Invisible Man ★★★★½

Quickie Review
Screams to Stream 2: A New Nightmare in 5 Parts (Part 4 Cont’d)
Screams to Stream 2 continues with another Universal Horror classic available on Shudder this month. An adaptation of H.G. Wells’ seminal science fiction novel, James Whale’s tale of experimentation gone wrong follows Dr. Griffin (Claude Rains) as he is driven insane when the invisibility formula he was working on has left him completely vanished for a prolonged period of time. Soon, he’s creating all kinds of chaos in the small town that he resides in and it makes him the most wanted man in town. Can anyone stop Griffin before he further escalate things to a homicidal level? This film is quite innovative for its visual effects at the time. At this point, it used camera trickery and special techniques that were truly impressive by 1930s standards and they still hold up surprisingly well in the age of HD. In terms of performances, this is Claude Rains’ time to shine in the title role as he brings a sense of menace and darkly comic glee to his performance, all without the character himself ever being seen. The Invisible Man is one of Universal’s entertaining horror movies, a blend of thrills, laughs, fantasy, suspense, science fiction and tragedy that will satisfy the imagination.
