Spider-Man: Far from Home

Spider-Man: Far from Home ★★★½

It took me a while to wrestle with this film because it left me feeling pretty mixed.

I found the film enjoyable and charming despite the issues I had with it ultimately. I found it having more strength when it was in its teenage romantic comedy element. But after much thought here are some of the issues and thoughts I have on it.

First, it may be strange to say because it is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after all, but the film is brought down by an inverted issue of films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Iron Man 2, and Avengers: Age of Ultron by being too connected to the MCU. While those films were brought down by trying to do the heavy lifting of or too much building to films that came after, Far From Home suffers from having too many story threads or elements connected to previous parts of the Infinity Saga. I wish there was more focus on Parker's internal conflict as well as on Parker's character and Mysterio's themselves. This leads into my next issue: Tone.

There is tonal whiplash coming off of Avengers: Endgame as well as uneven tone within. Maybe with time that whiplash between films may lessen but as of now, it's pretty stark (no pun intended). Also, the superhero element vs. teen romance brings different tones that make it feel like two different films conflated into one. When Peter seems bothered he has to leave the school vacation, I as a viewer felt bothered by the superhero antics he had to go do, distracting from the teenage drama and comedy of the trip.

I did like how they translated Mysterio’s powers to live-action. However, I wish they made better use of him with better writing and more development.
