    Pan's Labyrinth is a film at odds with itself. On one hand, it wants to be a dark fairy tale with the best sets and creatures ever designed by Del Toro, and on another it wants to be a story about the horrors of war.

    There are three types of Guillermo Del Toro movies:
    1. Comic-book adaptations (Blade II, both Hellboy movies)
    2. Monsters movies (Shape of Water, Pacific Rim)
    3. Human dramas (Crimson Peak, Cronos, Pan's Labyrinth)

    The Devil's Backbone fits in that last category, and it's the best out of all of them for a reason.
