    The American New Wave

The year is 1969. America is in turmoil. The civil rights movement is raging and the Vietnam war is at its peak. The country has just been handed over to the Nixon administration, perhaps America's most contraversial government of the 20th century. In the film industry things were finally looking up. Young and in touch directors finally struck a chord with a…

Warning Spoilers for: ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

Perhaps you may view this analysis as far fetched or rather pretentious sounding but I truly believe that Leone may have unconsciously made an attempt to capture these ideas in his filmography not only making diligent observations of genre but also the very essence of cinema itself.

    β€œI don’t know his name”

Controversial yet not explicit. LAST TANGO IN PARIS is truly an obscene film yet it isn’t nearly as graphic as you would expect. That’s not to say it’s most infamous scenes do not live up to the infamy because believe me they do. But more to say the Bertolucci isn’t making a sex film here at all, it’s certainly an ordinary take by today’s standards, this is an art film and from the start that…

I certainly liked ALICE IN THE CITIES, I just didn’t love it. Β Wenders’ style is absolutely the highlight and I loved the cinematography, raw editing and
guerrilla filmmaking on show but the story was at times captivating, at others dull. The characters felt a little one note and there just wasn’t really a strong driving force that completely held my attention throughout. A glimmer of greatness but overall an underwhelming venture, regardless for an early feature still rather impressive.

LICORICE PIZZA is a film that rides off its vibe. If you don't vibe with it you probably won't like it, but if you do vibe with it, you'll love every minute. Admittedly this is a film with plenty of flaws, it's very disjointed and very self indulgent but at the same time it's all amazing stuff. Sure characters appear and disappear but that's life and I think PTA knows this. He takes from films that preceded it like FAST…
