Midsommar ★★½

between this and Hereditary, Ari Aster has clearly expressed a fascination with female grief, showing women sobbing and screaming like its pornography. it’s a pattern i’m not very excited about, and where it felt earned in Hereditary, it feels like the torture of a young girl in Midsommar.

i’ve rarely been one for content warnings but i think y’all should know: if you are sensitive to extremely graphic, repeated depictions of mutilation or suicide, please skip this one.

nothing about this film is subtle, except the point. and that specific failure to make all of this awfulness mean anything at the end of the day forces me to say that anyone who liked hereditary because “it was more a family drama than a horror film” should absolutely skip this one. it’s not worth the 2.5 hour (too long!!!) run time.

it’s symmetrical though. i’ll give it that
