All Quiet on the Western Front is a war film that shows us the nightmares of the first World War while being visually stunning.
At the beginning we meet a group of young people who have been hypnotized by the propaganda and want to go to war. With full pride they want to experience an adventure and return as heroes. But when they arrived, it looked completely different than what they had imagined...
Most of the scenes are done really well, the action is bombastic, the cinematography is beautiful, the actors are fantastic, the camera work is top notch and the makeup (yellow teeth, mud...) is perfect.
What could have been improved in my opinion is the drama, which unfortunately doesn't work in some scenes and I couldn't quite feel it, which I think is important in a war film. Another point is the score, which was really cool, but was used in some scenes in a weird way.
Overall a war film worthy of its genre, a really strong German production, one of the best films of the year and a film I would have loved to see on the big screen.
