Bizarre, and even quite haunting, geriatric slasher from Australia that taps into strange aspects of sexual repression and British colonialism with it’s Victorian gothic house setting. Combined with the twisted melodramatic macabre and woozy-dream aesthetic of Giallo horror films from the era and a Straw Dogs like finale, it’s a wild mix that not often easy to follow but quite often effective, shocking and utterly unique.
Kenneth Branagh’s sexed up and shrilly adaptation of Frankenstein went pretty unloved when it first released, only really finding an audience now. It remains a mixed bag, attempting a multitude of elements to flesh out the story on screen into something more substantial than previous iterations.
