Soul 2020
i dont know what is up with the trend in animation style rn with the small blob-beings in mythical/afterlife worlds, but in soul (contrary to over the moon) it works.
i would consider this a near perfect film. it was engaging story, it all made sense, some twist and turns along the way, an adventure with a clear goal, big realisation for the main character and a lot of character growth, and i could go on. The animation style is still…

Da 5 Bloods 2020
this could have (should have) been nominated for more than just original score i thought. some brilliant storytelling and acting
really into the choice of not having younger actors play their younger versions but have these old men acting alongside chadwick boseman in the flashbacks as if they’ve always looked the same lol

ticks all of the boxes for a great documentary:
✅ good narrative and mix of new & old/authentic footage
✅ important and interesting but not-talked-about-enough subject
✅ good parallel or relevance to recent events -

Jojo Rabbit 2019
it was uncomfortable at times, watching jojo rabbit in cinemas. i’m not entirely convinced white people should be allowed to laugh at anti-semitism, even when it’s satire.
though, as always, taika knows exactly how to write and direct from a child’s perspective. and it’s really very beautiful and expertly handled the way that jojo’s innocence allows for incredibly sensitive themes and outright racist issues/opinions to be confronted on the screen and by the viewer.
