The Father

The Father ★★★★

My grandmother was recently diagnosed with dementia, so me and my mom decided to watch this together. She kept nodding, and approving, and looking back at me every time Anthony does something my grandmother does too. Constantly checking her wrist for her watch, accusing people of stealing, and telling stories about her life that aren't really true, she laughed as hard as Imogen Poots, too. The Father provides an accurate representation of people with dementia, even lets you in on an experience of what it's like, but for us, more like knowing what it has been for my grandmother. A glimpse of her confusions and rage. It isn't hard to miss that Anthony Hopkins really did awfully great in this one.
