Oh shit. This is like Marriage Story and The Irishman put together. A very personal, semi-autobiographical, slow, emotional drama about love and family, where the director comes to terms with his relationships, his mistakes and his mortality; through actors he’s worked with for decades.
Pain and Glory is painful and glorious, obviously. It’s masterfully shot, with touching dialogue, intimate moments, a brilliant ending and a subtle, yet heartbreaking leading performance by Antonio Banderas, which just became my favorite performance of the year so far. He completely transforms himself into this fictional version of Pedro Almodóvar.
