I'D TOTALLY FORGOTTEN ABOUT THAT ONE GAG IN THE FAKE PORNO AND THAT ENDED UP BEING THE FUNNIEST THING IN THIS
It was great to finally see this on the big screen (and with an audience of people laughing at all its best bits, loudest of all at the above moment) and for a second time after seeing it way back in high school. (Also, high-school-age Nat, how the hell did you convince yourself you were straight when you spent so much time frame-by-framing the zoo scene.)
Forgot how well-cut and well-paced and filled with wall-to-wall great sequences that stretch from "Bad Moon Rising" to the zoo sequence is, totally unfuckwithable.
Aside from the weird half-baked love plot and the not-great trying-to-get-arrested scene, this film straddles the line between cheese and self-awareness either perfectly or dangerously close to destroying that balance, and I think that's what makes it work overall. I love Griffin Dunne's acting in this (and his full awareness of the bit he's committing to) and Brenda Cavendish in the porn theater scene deserves a fuckin' Peabody for the five lines she has there alone.
