Spring Breakers ★★★★½

"This is poetry in motion. Big Booties and money falling, ya'll."

The best I've ever heard this film described was that it was "the Natural Born Killers of the Skrillex generation". I find that statement to be wholeheartedly accurate. Spring Breakers is a Bitingly dark caricature and pitch perfect social commentary on youth and the influence/corruption of the media on them. Proof of this is orchestrated in the casting of Hudgens, Gomez, and Benson as the leads. The movie doesn't work unless you cast those former Disney stars.

Harmony Korine manages to glamorize and disparage all in the same breath, painting a neon drenched, hypnotic, distorted portrait of the American college student. I haven't seen any other of his films but i get the feeling that his attitude towards voicing his societal issues involves him wholehearted diving into/wallowing in them in order to expose them much like Hunter S. Thompson.

There's moments of so much beauty amid all of the ugliness. Especially one montage using a Brittney Spears tune. Franco though steals the show. His American Dream ("'look at my shit") speech is easily one of the best of the decade for just how well it sums up the outlook of millennials and just how so damn funny the whole fucking thing is. I've repeated it countless times to myself to get a good laugh from time to time.

"This is the fuckin' American dream. This is my fuckin' dream, y'all! All this sheeyit! Look at my sheeyit! I got .. I got SHORTS! Every fuckin' color. I got designer T-shirts! I got gold bullets. Motherfuckin' VAM-pires. I got Scarface. On repeat. SCARFACE ON REPEAT. Constant, y'all! I got Escape! Calvin Klein Escape! Mix it up with Calvin Klein Be. Smell nice? I SMELL NICE! That ain't a fuckin' bed; that's a fuckin' art piece. My fuckin' spaceship! U.S.S. Enterprise on this shit. I go to different planets on this motherfucker! Me and my fuckin' Franklins here, we take off. TAKE OFF! Look at my shit. Look at my shit! I got my blue Kool-Aid. I got my fuckin' NUN-CHUCKS. I got shurikens; I got different flavors. I got them sais. Look at that shit, I got sais. I got blades! Look at my sheeyit! This ain't nuttin', I got ROOMS of this shit!"

A deeply misunderstood and underrated piece of the 2010's.
