Overall felt pretty mediocre to me. The concert scenes were kind of fun, but still pretty unremarkable and largely dependent on the energy of the music. The depiction of Freddy’s sexuality is convoluted, confused, and disrespectful. This movie seems like its patting itself on the back for depicting his sexuality when in reality it is kind of scared and cowardly. The family friendly approach is unsuccesful, irresponsible, and disrespectful. There is an abundantly clear distinction in how Mercury’s straight and gay relationships are handled in this film.
This movie did make me gayer though. I would fuck almost every mustached man in this movie, especially both the real life and hollywood depiction of Jim Hutton. Jesus christ it was hard to keep it together during some of these scenes sitting next to both my parents in the theater. I wasnt even uncomfortable i was just GAY. There is an extra half star here just for the mustaches.
Enjoyable watch, but unremarkable and cowardly. Much too easy for straight audiences to misunderstand.
