  • Gaslight

Gaslighting is specifically the manipulation of a person so that they begin to doubt their own mental health. While some gaslight another person intentionally to traumatize them, others do it as a means of protecting themselves from the consequences of their abusive actions. That is to say, gaslighting is a tactic of abusers to make a victim doubt their understanding of the abuse they are experiencing. It comes in many forms.

"I imagine my mother seeing this... 'Why do you have to say all this?'"

I have no intention of showing my family this review. There are a lot of thoughts and feelings I don't share with my family. I find it hard to let them in. I still have no idea how I felt about this movie. Parts of it were funny. I loved the weird dance scene to "Two of Hearts." The acting was abysmal, but that seemed intentional? The movie was ugly, the characters were vile (but possibly true to life? I have no idea! That's why I don't know how to feel about it!). Anyone out there who was a part of this scene have any insight? Is this an authentic piece of trash or is this exploitative garbage?

To my cisgender friends, I ask that, even if you would not normally do so, you please read this. This film was made for cisgender people, so I feel it important that I write this for cisgender people. I would not normally watch this movie, but it has been a subject of some discussion on this site in a way that has compelled me to watch it in order to discuss it credibly. I do not imagine what I have…
