One of the greatest adventures of all time.
This is one of those movies that leaves you thinking for long after your viewing of it. An incredibly subtle mystery with an out-of-nowhere ending that I believe, and slight spoilers here, drew a lot from the ending of A Brighter Summer Day. I can definitively say i'm on the Chang-dong Lee train, now.
Like Hereditary, Midsommar shares a veneer of false greatness that is both grating and arrogant. Unlike Hereditary, however, there is no entertainment to be found nor really anything to appreciate. With characters that are uninteresting, a plot that feels pointless, and shock value that falls flat, I'm left wondering what Aster set out to achieve.
