    Vidas secas. Entre o observacional e o documentário encenado com os camponeses atuando diretamente para a câmera, ancorado num sentimento essencialmente marxista. E como um bom soldado da revolução geralmente não é afeito a sutilezas, duas imagens se sobressaem: a criança que dorme nua dentro de uma caixa de papelão com o logo da Aliança Para o Progresso, e o agravo final onde o menino vira o quadro de Jesus para a parede – quanto a essa última, cf. a conclusão do colombiano Chircales (1972).

    It wouldn't be quite a genuine Marxist film if it didn't end by calling its subjects alienated for seeking solace in religious faith when everything else in their lives is despair, but otherwise this is an honest, angry, militant look at class warfare, work, and capitalist exploitation.
