This film doesn't warrant all of the drama surrounding it. It just doesn't.
I enjoyed a fair amount of the scenes with Larson and Jackson playing buddy cop. The two had excellent on-screen chemistry together; They pretty much felt in-sync the whole time. Lashana Lynch is downright flawless and I need to see more of her ASAP.
Larson had some pretty awesome moments herself. The "duel" at the end of the film was great and she sprinkles in some epic quotables to boot.
Unfortunately, I was largely bored throughout my viewing. Captain Marvel didn't feel like...a character at all if that makes any sense. There were moments where the film was so close to getting me engaged, but then it gave me another unfunny joke or overdone effects show. That last action set piece, while gorgeous looking, ended up becoming very frustrating. The film had no distinct production style to it and was just bland cinematography wise.
The over-reliance on "Woah man, haha remember the 90s?" moments were getting so insipid that it was bordering on self-parody. Yes, I remember Blockbuster Video and arcade cabinets *eye roll*
Then we're also privy to seeing a bunch of fanservice nuggets that we....really don't need to see? Nick Fury loses his eye and figures out that they need *ahem* Avengers. All the while, we're never given a chance to fully connect with Carol personally.
Yeah, I'm a little disappointed in this, but it's mainly due to the weak script and production design. Brie Larson is not really at fault here, but she's, unfortunately, a byproduct of this less-than-stellar MCU entry. However, I do believe that within the Avengers ensemble, Larson will be excellent.
