    Raiders of the Lost Ark

To my great fortune, my local movie theater has finally reopened with a handful of new releases and four older films: Back to the Future, Inception, Jurassic Park, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Naturally, I watched the film I’ve already seen 50 times first.

Even though I’ve seen Raiders dozens of times, seeing it on the big screen was a religious experience. It didn’t feel like I was watching one of my favorite films for the umpteenth time. It felt…

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

    ★★★★★

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is intimately tied to the motif of the flame, right down to the structure of the film.

It begins slowly, burning ever so slightly. There are hints of a spark, but it’s clear that warmth must be proceeded by patience.

As the film progresses, you become transfixed as each brilliant element unfurls: the beautiful cinematography, the outstanding performances, the seldom-used but intense music.

It will be a different moment for everybody, but at some point…

    The Matrix

This is my third time watching The Matrix but my first time watching the trilogy. After seeing the Matrix Resurrections trailer for the first time yesterday at the theater, I’m super hyped.

The Matrix gets better every time I watch it. I went from thinking it was a bit overrated to appreciating the cultural impact it had to thinking it’s a near-perfect interpretation of the Hero’s Journey.

This is one of those movies that I would introduce to an alien trying to understand cinematic storytelling, along with The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars. It’s one of those definitive movies.

Story time! Me and a friend were planning to see Candyman (a review that’s long overdue), but after we bought our ticket we learned that the showing was cancelled due to some issue with that theater/projector, so instead of waiting for another showing, we went to see Malignant instead.

And it was the best decision ever! Because I was able to experience one of the most FUN films of the year in a theater rather than HBO Max.

    Malignant is another winning…

    Bo Burnham: Inside

I’m a MASSIVE fan of Bo Burnham’s previous two specials. I truly believe what. and Make Happy are masterpieces of comedy and performance art that bend the formula and create something that is simultaneously hilarious and beautiful. I’ve watched both of them countless times and I will surely rewatch them countless more times in the future.

So it pains me to say that I will likely never revisit Inside. While it is a visual marvel that successfully portrays how painful the creative…

The Thing is sorta like 12 Angry Men but on cocaine. It’s a tight horror flick filled with paranoia and mystery, and some incredibly ambitious practical effects included to create something truly iconic.
