Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key

Went into this incredibly excited but felt that it was a little lacking. Giallo as a sub-genre can maybe be criticized for being more style over substance but the truly great entries into the genre that I have seen rely on both elements.

Your Vice is a Locked Room suffers from a plot that at points seems both directionless and overly complex, dragging at some moments and lurching forward recklessly in others. A ton happens for the 95-minute runtime but…

So the past week I've watched a couple of movies (which I will get around to reviewing eventually) that made me say "Holy Fuck", but none contained more "Holy Fuck"-iness than this.

I haven't seen much Polanski, I watched Macbeth in high school (kind of weird my teacher chose his version) and I've seen the Pianist with my now 96(97 in two days)-year-old Jewish grandfather who fought with the US in WW2, but outside of the two his filmography remains…

Molasses-like camera movements, overexposed light, atmospheric use of weather, and little sun to be seen - everything I expected going into this knowing of Feher's relation to Bela Tarr.

Getting past the fact that this movie is in desperate need of refurbishing, this has to be one of the creepiest murder mysteries I have ever seen. The desolate rural Hungarian setting mixed with the foreboding camera movements and score as well as long shots of the rural countryside make this…

    As Tears Go By

    My first Wong.

While I know that many consider this to be among his weakest films and the version I watched had subtitles that at most times were nonsensical, this was still incredible.

Everything about this - the lighting, the music cues, the desire for unrequited love and appreciation underscoring the violent lifestyle of the characters. All of it hit the mark. Hopefully, the remaster by Criterion will end up on the channel and I can watch it in a little higher quality.

If this is Wong at his worst I can't imagine what his best is.
