The biggest compliment I can give this trilogy is that every chapter spoke to me on a different level, it’s nuts how Linklater got me this invested in two characters.
Midnight doesn’t just ride on the coattails of the previous two films, I think it actually validates their two little bourgeois fantasies by concluding their arcs in the only faithful way; getting ugly. Celine and Jesse have arrived at a point where life is tangible and no longer a wishful prospect, and their fairy tale has its own loose ends, from rocky divorces to career setbacks. The back-in-fourth is painful to watch and maybe not the sugarcoated ending most people wished for, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I loved spacing these out once every 4 months, it's only right I finished on Julie Delpy's bday ❤️
