Film 6 out of 100
O is for Once
I had an interesting relationship with this film before I even put it in my DVD player. I remember back in 2007 I was so mad at this film. It had beaten "Enchanted" at the Oscars for Best Original Song. ("Enchanted" being a Disney film I adore) So that was one reason why I put it off. Another reason was I remember the glut of musical films coming out around the same time: "August Rush" and "Across the Universe" are the ones that come to mind. So I decided to see none of them at the theatre. And now here we are in 2013 and I have now seen all of them.
I have always been a fan of musicals. Big splashy musicals numbers, colorful costumes, over the top acting. All of it. I eat it up. I knew going into this film that it would be different, I just didn't know how different.
Take away all of the extravagant sets, the splashy musical numbers, the colorful costumes, and the over the top acting; what would you be left with? You would be left with "Once" an intimate musical. Almost all of the musical numbers pulled at my heart springs in one way or another. And the story itself is so simplistic that I cannot believe it took this long for a story like this to be put to film. The film is an emotional rollercoster and one that I cannot wait to take again. I will be running out to my library to put up the soundtrack tonight.
