Combines Spielberg's bluntest instincts (in a context where they're deleterious) with Kushner's penchant for florid over-explication (which can be galvanizing onstage but feels like an assault on camera), the two finding their combined nadir in a grandiosely sensitive Michelle Williams performance that might actually be even less convincing than was her Marilyn Monroe.
