Brett Arnold’s review published on Letterboxd:
Doing an experiment to see if watching this and BOOGIE NIGHTS back-to-back will emulate the experience of watching BABYLON
Every “movie about the movies,” even the ones coming out today, are after what this pulled off effortlessly on the first try. Acidic and hilarious even by modern standards. “She’s so refined, I think I’ll kill myself.”
And it’s the gold-standard of movie musicals to boot, every number a joyous marvel that reminds you the power of the medium. We need to bring earnest direct-to-camera choreographed dudes dancing (thanks RRR and Naatu Naatu for some of that energy). Remember when movie stars had TALENT?!
I somehow always forget this is one of the greatest movies of all time until I’m 5 minutes in and then go “oh yeah movies don’t really get better then this do they?”
