GenkiB’s review published on Letterboxd:
I recently saw “Lupin the 3rd: Castle of Cagliostro” so I thought I’d keep the Lupin train rollin’ with this new 3D animation style feature. OK, I’m done and I think all the Pixar films have spoiled me a bit as I found the level of animation in this new Lupin tale a bit middle of the road. As well, the voice acting seemed pretty average. However, I should point out that I watched the English dubbed version coz I had no other option. The voice acting for the Japanese version may be a bit more inspired but I can’t really speak to that. Lupin is a great character but what makes his story so interesting is his group of buddies and that police type guy that’s always chasing him around the globe. Fortunately, this film gives the surrounding characters a lotta time to shine so I appreciated that. Overall, this was OK but it never really made it to that next level of being really good. And yet, I feel that the target audience of elementary school kids will like this a lot more than I did. This view of “Lupin III: The First” is a 6 outta 10 and I look forward to more adventures from our infallible wisecracking thief.
