  • Hero

    Hero

    ★★★★★

Great gangster film, floridly directed and sportively acted. Part of the Chinese Bund sub-genre, Hero has the substance of an old Hollywood 30s gangster picture along with the energy of a 90s action flick. The battles are thrilling and the character drama is swift and well done; perhaps too swift as I wouldn't have minded a longer film. If this was done today, it would probably have enough material for an entire show. Apparently this is a remake of an earlier film called Boxer from Shantung, I guess I'll have to check that out.

  • Diamonds Are Forever

    Diamonds Are Forever

    ★★★★

A lot better than I remember, Diamonds are Forever is an absurd delight. While at times marred by overt misogyny, this Bond picture is expertly designed and deeply watchable; the sets are beautiful, the women are gorgeous, the villains are crazy, the action is wild, and Bond is cool as hell. Connery was a brilliant actor and I think the reason why he succeeded so well as Bond was because how much he purposely chaffed against the archetype of the…

  • The Grudge

    The Grudge

    ★★★★★

Finally, a real horror movie. Not that bourgeois A24 cosplay stuff. It's the only one out of the American takes to understand and convey the existential, rotting psychic dread that the original Japanese classic so throughly and dismayingly wrought onto audiences. And, ever subtly, it has something strong to express regarding our country, which is decaying inside out from economic fallout due to mass privatization and large-scale institutional apathy. Everywhere you go, there seems to be people dying from illness,…

  • Phantasm

    Phantasm

    ★★★★

As hallucinogenic self-reflexive parables about grief that are deeply inspired by Dune go, I stan this one. It has the feel of a bunch of friends making a home movie and for some reason I find that very appealing here.

  • Resident Evil: Retribution

    Resident Evil: Retribution

    ★★★★

Filled with rollicking action sequences, sexy ladies, gnarly creatures, cool guns, and armed with a socio-political conscious, this entry of Resident Evil overcomes its admittedly rickety script with its sheer vibes and bold ideas. You can call me a PWSA apologist, I don't give a shit.

  • Ash Is Purest White

    Ash Is Purest White

    ★★★★★

A hundred and forty minutes of watching people lives fall into the maw of time, like sand slipping through one's fingers after lifting a fistful up from a barren dune. A tragic film indeed but also one of the purest humanity. It's a truly soulful experience, filled with great beauty and acting of the highest caliber courtesy of Zhao Tao and Liao Fan. Ash is Purest White is a masterpiece and it once again affirms Jia Zhangke as one of the best filmmakers on Planet Earth. It's a must see.

  • Batman & Robin

    Batman & Robin

    ★★★★

The campiest comic book movie ever made. How could one not find this to be entertaining? How could one not find this to be funny on purpose? I admit it's far from perfect, Clooney's a great actor but makes for a stiff Batman and the Batgirl stuff is treated as a mere afterthought in the picture, but it's a real lark. Also, this is probably one of the biggest sandboxes a director ever played on and it really shows. Every cent is on the screen, resulting in a truly dazzling visual experience.

  • Thunderball

    Thunderball

    ★★★★★

RIP Sean Connery. One of the greatest actors of all time.

  • Thor

    Thor

    ★★

It's been awhile since I've seen this one, probably almost a decade. It's about as good as I remember it to be, which means it's kind of terrible. The 'fish out of water' comedy is handled clumsily and the Asgard royal court drama is badly done. As a result, Thor sits very awkwardly between a dramatic LOTR-esque high fantasy epic that has ambitions of prestige and a self-parody. The saving grace that keeps it from being unwatchable is Hemsworth's charismatic performance and Hiddleston's cunning Loki, who is a well-conceived villain here and later on.

  • Iron Man

    Iron Man

One of the great Superhero films.
