This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

weird thing to say considering She Eats Her Baby but maybe this didn't go far enough to live up to the atmosphere, the soundtrack, aleksandra cwen's performance... or maybe the plot was just ambiguous to a fault? or maybe i just don't like when a story is just "a woman suffers" and that's it. still worth watching and immersing yourself in imo

some reasons this should have had harry potter's cultural impact:

    - girl power
    - not racist
    - not british
    - aly & aj on the soundtrack
    - doesn't betray its "love always triumphs over evil" theme with individualism
    - gives equal importance to biological, adopted, and found family
    - everyone could identify themselves as an alex or a camryn instead of a hufflepuff
    - the spells rhyme

they had us in the first half ngl.................. really felt betrayed as this devolved into a biopic about some guy who sells mushrooms / a psilocybin propaganda film. barely any science and a frustrating tendency to say nonsense like "mycelium is the dominant species on earth." they really felt it was necessary to include "stoned ape theory" and act like that was legitimate scientific thought lol. also, weird fetishistic references to, iirc, unspecified indigenous peoples while like everyone in this…
