  • Mighty Joe Young

    Mighty Joe Young

As with King Kong, or any similar stories, there's an inherent amount of racism embedded into it that can't be ignored. I do appreciate the solid ACAB stance this took inadvertently or not that cops are both incompetent and vicious enough to want to murder Joe for destroying property (sound familiar?) and even tried to shoot him AS he was saving a child.

Plus the stop motion effects are lovely, of course, with Harryhausen on board.

    tw/cw: racism
animal harm rip those poor lions

  • Synchronic

It's not a strong as their strongest, particularly with understandable criticism that our Black protagonist is putting himself through hell for his asshole white friend's daughter. If it's your first time watching their work, I'd say go with Resolution/Endless instead.

    tw/cw: blood/gore
    unreality big time

  • Stranger in Our House

    Stranger in Our House

I loved seeing Fran Drescher even if she wasn't in it much, and overall it's a pretty okay 'protag is the only one who can tell something's wrong and is gaslit by everyone else' type films. The incest vibes were a lot though.

Also that wax figure was like DEFINITELY a dildo.

tw/cw: Incesty implications like a Lot
    animal death (horse)

  • Tarantula

A lot of sexism unsurprisingly, but giant spider cool and body horror so hey.

tw/cw: Aforementioned sexism and body horror
    and spiders of course

  • Sisters

Grace said ACAB and she was right.

    tw/cw: blood
    mention of child death

  • The Wolf of Snow Hollow

I am truly baffled by the amount of praise this film received from horror film lovers whose opinions I appreciate. Genuinely, and truly not trying to be mean in any way, I can't wrap my head around what there is to enjoy.

While I will absolutely acknowledge that timing is a factor, as having incompetence sited as the reason a white woman cop murdered a 20 year old Black man rather than supposedly taser him as intended makes it hard…

    Jennifer Tilly/Tiffany ma'am I love you......

    tw/cw: blood/gore

  • The Swerve

    The Swerve

A film that is slowly suffocating, as our protagonist is as well. It's a rough one, but very well done.

    tw/cw: child death
    pedophilia/statutory rape
    animal death (mouse)

  • Island of Terror

    Island of Terror

Cushing and the little blobby creatures are the best parts of this and basically make it worth watching, but the leading man going to, I think, kill the leading lady to spare her (???) before stopping at the last second was like...... maybe ask first damn.

tw/cw: Nothing really aside from epilepsy warning at the very end, and sexism type stuff

This film blended several different genres all into one film seamlessly, making something completely unique. The chemistry between Dylan and Mara feels so genuine and sweet, and really grounds the film along with a dedication to making all the kids in it feel very much like real kids dealing with tragedy that they can't fathom. I feel like it may have accidentally hit something resonant with what it must be like to be a teen right now dealing with a…

  • Vamp

Grace Jones deserved more time/some actually dialogue, but I guess her vibe was pretty cool still all the same. It's kind of a hot mess but in a fun way mostly, with some bonkers great green and pink lighting. It really could've ended at the first tease though.

    tw/cw: blood

  • Concrete Cowboy

    Concrete Cowboy

    Lovely, and an excellent cast.
