Beautiful puppetry, excellent designs including some Guy Davis work, what's not to love?

    ★★★★

Excellent!! Truly unnerving, well acted particularly by Liana Liberato, and a sort of Innsmouth-y vibe. I haven't squirmed so much watching a horror film in a while, so this was a treat.

  • Tombstone

    Tombstone

    ★★★★

A gorgeous heartfelt western that, in my opinion, is the best there is. I'm certainly biased, as it's a film that's been a staple in my home since I was a kid. I've had a crush on Doc "I'm your huckleberry" Holiday since then too, but everyone in this is just So good. I was expecting a shock coming back to this after many years in the form of racism and such, but honestly ESPECIALLY considering the genre? Not bad.

I finally got to watching the director's cut of this, which to be honest it'd been so long since I'd seen the original I can't say I remembered it enough to notice the differences, but regardless it was excellent. I certainly appreciated a lot of things more with this watch. Also everyone is hot??? Damn.

Aside from a few unnecessary jokes about gender biases which are very easy to ignore for the rest of what this film has to offer, it's just excellent. Beautifully animated, no unnecessary romance between kids like I always assume will happen, in fact it's established that Jin sees Yi as a sister so it stays solely focused on the theme of family which is excellent. PoC actually voiced by PoC!! An interesting twist with who the villain really is, etc. just all lovely. Truly one of my biggest regrets not getting to see it in theaters and support it there.

    tw/cw: nothing rly

  • Blood Quantum

    Blood Quantum

    ★★★★

It's always impressive for zombies to be made fresh and interesting again, and this film nails that thanks to it's (sadly) rarely seen perspective of featuring, and being directed by, indigenous people. The narrative about colonialism is stark, and more than fair. The acting is great, there's excellent practical gore and effects, and Lysol's signature look that's featured on the poster is killer. It absolutely deserves a watch.

  • Middleditch & Schwartz

    Middleditch & Schwartz

    ★★★★

It's WILD how good they are at improv, even with just what I know about it. It gave me a good laugh, which is certainly needed right now.

tw/cw: There's a few ehhhh jokes that just go on for too long to do with teenagers boning and junk but honestly it's pretty fine

  • Mr. Right

    Mr. Right

    ★★★★

It's not perfect by any means but god I had a good time watching it. Sam Rockwell's hot, his and Anna Kendrick's relationship was so enjoyable to watch and she got to Murder rather than be a damsel in distress, Michael Eklund was a hot bastard man, and RZA ans Steve also had a cute relationship with Rockwell like......... it was just weirdly exactly what I love to see.

Just as good as everyone said, if not more so than I expected. Taika is just so goddamn good as a director, and the commentary throughout the film is so carefully done and balances humor and genuinely shattering moments so well. I'm still reeling from the opening credits of giving a Beatles-esque vibe to Nazis praising Hitler. Goddamn.

tw/cw: Nazism/antisemitism probably obviously but you know
    animal death ( bun :( )

  • The Pit and the Pendulum

    The Pit and the Pendulum

    ★★★★

This version of Pit and the Pendulum was killer, it was so viscerally unnerving and unrelenting in it's intense gaze of the church and all the shit they've gotten away with under the guise of doing god's bidding. Lance Henriksen is so good at being such a bastard.
